Lesch Nyhan Syndrome (LNS) is an inherited genetic disorder. It appears mostly in males and causes dibilitating neurological and physiological symptoms. In most cases it is fatal. LNS is caused by the body's inability to create the enzyme hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyltransferase or HPRT. This results in cells' inability to matabalize purines, types of neuclaic acid. Therefore, uric acid builds up in the body's central nervous system, muscles and other tissues. This disease has personally effected my family, as my brother Joshua has lived with the condition for almost two years. I hope that you find this site interesting as well as informative and that you see what sufferers of LNS must live with each day. Thank you. |
